Elyse Trusell earned a B.A. in English and Spanish and her M.Ed. at the University of St. Thomas, Houston. Her career in special education, spanning two decades, began with twice-exceptional students at Carnegie-Vanguard High School. For sixteen years, she supported students with learning differences at The Joy School (TJS), a special education environment, serving students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, autism-spectrum, processing and language struggles, ADD/ADHD, and more. At TJS she taught 6-8th grade ELA for thirteen years, designing curriculum to support the learning needs of students and preparing 8th graders for mainstreaming to high school, including providing one-on-one and small group remediation. She also served on the academic administrative team, overseeing tutoring programs and consulting with parents, teachers, and professionals to identify tutoring plans to promote student success. She is thrilled to join Cathedral High School as the Director of Learning Enrichment. At the heart of learning enrichment is the cultivation of deeper learning engagement, tools, and skills that allow students to embrace learning with their whole ability in a Catholic classical educational setting.
Elyse and her husband, a potter, homeschool their four children. They enjoy fortifying their home library, spending time out of doors, and playing with their great Pyrenees puppy. The Trusells are parishioners at Our Lady of Walsingham.
